Today’s devotional reading comes from Psalm 136.

“O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever” (v. 1).

Psalm 136 showcases God’s mighty deeds and, in so doing, demonstrates His mercy.

It tells of how He created the earth and the heavens, because “His mercy endureth forever.”  It recounts how He delivered His beloved Israel from the hand of Pharaoh, because “His mercy endureth forever.” And it speaks of how God smote the great pagan kings, because “His mercy endureth forever.”

Because God is merciful, He cares for His people, and delivers them from danger.

But something that we rarely consider is that God is merciful even towards the wicked.  Verse 25 says that He “giveth food to all flesh, for His mercy endureth forever.” Even though the wicked hate God, He feeds them until the end of their lives, because He is merciful.

How much more then, will God show His mercy towards the righteous?  We can expect God to continue to be merciful to us, though we are prone to error.  He will be merciful until the end, while He fashions and molds us into the image of His Son.

“The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord endureth for ever” (138:8).
